It was nearly 10 years ago, that I sat at a lunch table, on the University of South Carolina campus, where I read article about the nameless decade.
The year was 1999, the whole world was preparing for the apocalypse or turn of the century. Media’s hottest term of the day was Y2K, Year 2000. In stating Y2K, one would be referring to the computer Year 2000 problem. Wikipedia describes Y2K as a “notable computer bug resulting from the practice in early computer design of representing the year with two digits.” How Celestine Prophecy is it when my goal is to establish the two-digit pronunciation of 00s.
Was no one listening? I can hear John Ruben now singing, “Hindsight is a beautiful thing,” because now I’m for sure no one, I mean no one is thinking about the missing term for this decade - the years between 2000 and 2009.
Shame on all of us! Where are the years going? I certainly don’t want to live without feeling something for this period of time. Where in the world is this word? Simply believe in the Unies. Let’s stand together in unity and choose this term. Will all the weather personalities Please Stand Up, I need you Brian Norcross. Al Roker pay attention and say it with me, “The weather’s getting cold tonight, it will be getting to the low to mid-unies.”
Please don’t feel bad for me if this word doesn’t catch-on, I’ve got a day job. I’ve channeled this energy and persistence into a Marketing and Production Manager position at Island Queen Cruises and Biscayne Lady Yacht Charters. But no matter how much fun this job is, there still a small piece of me that is getting ready to push again for the Unies to be heard. But now my focus is on the approaching decade once again, here comes the 10s! Deja-vu damn! Why me?
My life is kind of coming full circle and the trip to South Carolina once again, has rekindled the spirit. In early March 09, my girlfriend and I went back to the University of South Carolina, in which, I sat at the very spot where the legend of Ryan Guerra began. Only this time, it was reflective but almost certainly, exciting to name the next decade too. The Decies!
